Our world needs alternative fibres to survive, which means companies and governments need to invest in better and sustainable materials that restore nature. At Caribamboo, we have a vision of helping to create thriving rural communities whilst producing a pulp that can replace traditional tree-based fibres for the tissue industry. Here are 3 utopian and unique values of bamboo that make this plant an ideal candidate.
By planting bamboo, we can help restore land degraded by deforestation. The plant therefore offers an outstanding opportunity to replace non-sustainable technologies.
But why is it so sustainable? Well one of the reasons is that bamboo is the world’s fastest growing plant, ready to be harvested annually and sustainably after four to five years in contrast to typical hardwood that takes many years longer to mature and can be harvested only once! The plant is also very versatile and can produce a vast range of sustainable goods. At Caribamboo, we believe that if we can harness the potential of bamboo, the planet will be closer to achieving its sustainable development goals.
One of many notable eco-friendly values of bamboo is that it does not require damaging fertilisers for optimal growth. Discarded leaves of bamboo provide all needed nutrients when they start to decompose. But its most utopian characteristic would have to be that the plant actually has the ability to fight climate change! Bamboo releases 30% more oxygen into the atmosphere and absorbs more carbon dioxide compared to other plants. It greatly decreases the amount of greenhouse gases and cleans the air!
Bamboo’s amazing properties also mean that it is a real low carbon alternative to plastic. Plastic pollution affects the value of natural resources provided by the ocean and possesses a health risk to both human and marine life. At Caribamboo, we want to harness bamboo’s qualities to facilitate a programme that is dedicated to beat plastic pollution by producing bamboo straws and twizzle sticks with the material that we don’t need for our pulp!
Bamboo is an extraordinary renewable resource that has a unique potential in fighting poverty and making economic development sustainable. Its fast-growing abilities make it an economical source of material and if managed correctly, it functions as an abundant and rapidly replenished natural resource. As a consequence, it can drastically cut our need to deforest and help save the environment while allowing for employment opportunities and ecosystem services.
Bamboo’s economic role is estimated to increase at an accelerated pace – both locally and in international trade – as other forest resources become strained due to climate change. Leading providers of paper-based consumer products are seeking to reduce their forest fibre footprint over the next few years. Caribamboo will become a big part of a globally growing industry in Jamaica as it farms bamboo and turns it into a green alternative fibre for the tissue industry. Our project will therefore have significant benefits for the Jamaican agriculture sector and the local economy.
It’s time to switch to materials that are sustainable and that will seek to reduce the damage we have made to our plant. Bamboo is the future!
